CONTRIBUTORS:

Corinne Cowan

grew up in the Rio Grande area south of Beaverlodge, and has lived in Grande Prairie for the last 33 years. She is married with two adult children. This is not her first writing award. In 1967, she received first place in a centennial contest for an essay on the history of the Peace area entitled "The Personal Centennial Project of Spirit River M.L.A. A. O. Simrite. As a grade 12 student, she won first prize for an essay on Development in Northern Alberta. After a period out of school, she returned as an adult student and completed a degree in history through G.P.R.C. and Athabasca University.

Jim Nelson

is a well-known local author whose plays, "The Ballad of Knobby Clark" and "Baldy's Run" have delighted audiences. His book, "Horse Laughs and Hard Knocks", a collection of horse stories, was published in 2000 by Lone Pine Press. He has also had work produced on CBC Radio and Access Television. He and his wife have two sons and one daughter.

Elizabeth Welter

was born in Bassano, Alberta, but came to Grande Prairie with her family at the age of seven and grew up on a farm a bit west of the city. Her very active involvement with the community includes helping establish the United Way, volunteering with the Museum, and working with 4H and the scouting and guiding movements. Her skills with crafts and cooking came in handy, for though her work with youth involved a variety of activities, they always included teaching crafts and "feeding the multitudes", as she says. Previous writing experience includes helping write "Along the Wapiti" and "A History of Girl Guides in Alberta", as well as her family history. She has 6 children and 9 grandchildren.

Christine van der Giessen

grew up in Chetwynd, and moved with her husband to Grande Prairie in 1997. They currently live on a farm near Grande Prairie with their two year old, who keeps Christine busy. Christine majored in history in university. This interest in history, plus an equal interest in writing, inspired her to write the paper that appears in Lobstick. She says she is grateful for the millennium contest for her own sake as well as for her parents', in giving her the incentive to write about their lives.
